How to Deploy a WhatsApp AI Agent in Under 10 Minutes

Step-by-step guide to creating and deploying your first AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot with GenSmart.

GenSmart Team

Getting a WhatsApp AI agent live used to mean hiring a developer, waiting weeks, and spending thousands on setup. With GenSmart, you can go from zero to a fully functional agent in a single coffee break.

Here's exactly how to do it.

What You'll Need

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A GenSmart account (free to sign up)
  • A WhatsApp Business account connected to Meta
  • A clear idea of what you want your agent to do

That's it. No servers, no API keys to manage, no code.

Step 1: Create Your Agent

Log into your GenSmart dashboard and click New Agent. You'll see two options:

  • Start from a template — great for common use cases like lead capture, support, or booking
  • Build from scratch — full control over your agent's personality and behavior

For your first agent, we recommend picking the Sales Lead Capture template. It comes pre-built with:

  • A friendly greeting
  • Questions to capture name, email, and interest
  • Automatic lead scoring after each conversation

Step 2: Customize the System Prompt

The system prompt is your agent's brain. It defines how it talks, what it knows, and what it's trying to accomplish.

Click on the Prompt tab and you'll see the template's default prompt. Customize it:

  1. Replace [Your Company Name] with your actual business name
  2. Adjust the tone (formal, casual, friendly)
  3. Add specific details about your products or services

Pro tip: Use the AI Prompt Generator. Describe your agent in plain English ("I want a friendly sales assistant for a digital marketing agency") and GenSmart will generate a polished prompt for you.

Step 3: Add Your Knowledge Base

Your agent is smart, but it needs to know your business. Go to the Knowledge tab and:

  • Upload your product PDF, pricing sheet, or FAQ document
  • Or paste a URL and GenSmart will scrape and index your website

The RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system automatically pulls relevant information when customers ask questions — no manual configuration needed.

Step 4: Connect to WhatsApp

Navigate to the Channels tab and click Connect WhatsApp.

GenSmart uses the official Meta Cloud API with Embedded Signup. Click the button, log in with your Facebook account, select your WhatsApp Business number, and you're done. The connection takes about 60 seconds.

Step 5: Test Before Going Live

Before publishing, use the Preview tab to chat with your agent yourself. Try:

  • Asking common customer questions
  • Testing edge cases ("What if I want a refund?")
  • Checking that variables like name and email are captured correctly

When you're happy, click Publish.

Your Agent is Live

That's it. Your AI agent is now answering WhatsApp messages 24/7, capturing leads, and scoring them automatically in your CRM.

Next steps to consider:

  • Set up Human Takeover so you can jump into conversations when needed
  • Configure notifications to alert you when a high-score lead comes in
  • Review your CRM daily to follow up with your best prospects

The whole process takes 10 minutes the first time. By your third agent, you'll be deploying in under 5.
